Think TAnk - Photography

Posted by Kelly on Oct 22 - 2014

Hey, hey, it's that time again...yep, here's another Think TAnk blog post!

Think TAnk showcases things we have liked, things we have found interesting or just things that we think look nice from the past month! Since it was the Brighton Photo Biennial in October, what better subject than Photography for our latest Think TAnk post.

1. The Drum Live

The above video is an investigation into the power of photography by Opposite Days & Getty Images.  In the video the importance of images for brands is discussed as well as immediate reactions to powerful photographs and the feelings they evoke.

As a design agency, we know the importance of photography. It is an essential part of our catalogue design, helping to communicate ideas, products and lifestyles.

Good photographers make the designer’s job easy, but if the photos are going to be combined with type later, it’s always helpful to keep this in mind when shooting to really get what you want. Great photos with no place for text generally do not make for great design. - See more at: http://www.designtheplanet.com/importance-of-photography-in-graphic-design/#sthash.F8qXtNIw.dpuf

2. Brighton photo biennial 2014

Returning for its sixth edition, the BPB14 works with a bunch of collaborators for new projects based on the theme of Communities, Collectives & Collaboration. Always embracing innovative ideas, perspectives and approaches, the photography is explored as prints, projections, pixels and pages. The festival programme as ever was packed full of workshops, screenings ensuring everyone "whatever their level of interest or expertise, can particulate in BPB14". If you missed it, definitely check it out next year!

3. Sigmar Polke

This is a great retrospective that started in October but is on until February so you still have plenty of time to see it.…

If you don't know Polke, do make the effort to check out the exhibition at the Tate Modern. "Sigmar Polke was one of the most insatiably experimental artists of the twentieth century." This retrospective is the first to bring together his amazing use of different media that he worked on during his career from photography in the 70's to painting in the 80's. Off to plan my trip to London as I type...

4. Jan Von Holleben

This is a photographer that I just happened to come across in a photography inspiration blog.

His work is very creative and his body of work focuses on “the man who learns through play” combining his own experiences of play and childhood memories with academic concepts.

If you love it as much as I do and you live in the Brighton area, then you are in luck! Until March 2015, there is an exhibition at Hove Museum 'The Amazing Analogue: How we play photography', part of the Brighton Photo Biennial 2014 which I mentioned above!

5. Photography Tips

If you are a fellow designer, you will know how important photography is. This article covers 10 expert photography tips for designers - from moodboards, retouching, planning and thinking creatively. Here at TA Design, we have done one or two photoshoots in our time so we have learnt some things along the way. Always wanting to share our advice, our very own Bobbie did this great blog post 'Organising a successful photoshoot' - why not have a read and learn all about models, products, props, stylists, locations and weather...just some of the things involved! See the end result of that particular photoshoot on our portfolio page here.

And, finally,
